I Get All The News I Need from the Weather Report

That's a line from my favorite Simon & Garfunkel song.
It pretty much sums up how I really feel. But yesterday, I found myself getting pulled in by all the negative news and people taking sides. I found myself falling into that same trap.
I realize it’s not a trap for everyone, but it is for me, every time I fall for it.
There was news about political stuff going on and while I have my opinions on lots of things, I try to stay out of the fray. I don’t really have a political party to which I’m espoused. First of all, neither of them – and there really are only two that matter – have a full platform I can follow. So if it were ever to come to a point where I have to choose a party, I’ll abstain from voting.
Anyway, I found myself getting pulled into “conversations” from both sides regarding a politically charged topic that was in the news. And that’s part of the problem, the news.
I once heard it said that a news producer’s job is to fill the space between the commercials. I’d say that’s pretty accurate. How else could a guy like me get booked for news appearances multiple times in several cities to talk about a book I wrote and published in only 3 weeks?
So yeah, the news is a problem. I agree, in large part, it’s fake news. They base it on some facts, but then put their own spin on it to keep us interested. Because very little of what happens every day can stand on its own merit. And you have to fill the space between the commercials, because the commercials are what it's all about.
Another great lyric from another great song, “It’s interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry.”
Don’t believe that? Wait for the next active shooter situation. Watch how long they keep that going, and notice how long we keep watching it – the same no information report hour after hour after hour.
So, yesterday I got fished-in again and started commenting on all the back and forth on social media. And you know what, for all the making of my point it just made me feel crappy. That’s because nothing good or positive ever comes from all that BS.
Today I’m going back to getting all the news I need from the weather report. Do I apply sunscreen, or put on a jacket. That’s pretty much all I need to know.
I get it, a lot of people will tell me I can’t stick my head in the sand and just ignore what’s going on. What if something bad happens and I’m unprepared for it? What will I do then? When all the stuff hits the fan, is knowing about it really going to make a difference? The answer is, no, absolutely not. I’m still going to have to find a way to survive.
So, for everyone who continues to tune into it, I hope you have enough ammo to defend your doomsday supplies, because when the sh*t goes down, I’m coming after them.
That’s how I’ll prepare for it.
Yep, I get all the news I need from the weather report. It’s all I need. It’s all I want.
